What the Rich Know that You Don't

You have to be rich to 'get' rich, if you know what I'm saying, and if you don't, you're probably a poor person. Here's some tips and ideas to get you started on becoming rich, because there is definitely enough for everyone on earth to be super annoyingly wastefully wealthy, and anyone telling you otherwise is a communist or loser.

How they're different from you: They're different, in qualitative ways, from people who are not wealthy, such as the middle class. Why is this? Read the linked article and get back. I can wait... So the point is obviously that the rich are simply a different breed, not plagued by the fear and uncertainty and the mentally-sapping contretemps of poverty.

You see, the world is actually quite fair if you're rich, so you can afford to make big gambles, wake up every day feeling confident, and do things that would make lesser mortals quiver with poverty-related fear and incompetence. It's not a function of exceptionalism written by a wanker kiss-ass, the article is trying to help you understand that you're poor because you're not as good.

They're different, end of story. The naysayers are a bunch of anxious and impecunious babies who like having their hands held by oversized governments and loudmouth hippies. Some day, hopefully, private security armies will give them what-for, and they'll realize they have to work and strive to be wealthy, and not spend their money frivolously.

Join the Culture: Do your time, immerse yourself in the culture, and be prepared to fight for your profits. Before long you'll be salivating at the announcement of layoffs and mergers, certain that the money being gouged out of the wealth of your country (nationalism is an outdated concept that only the middle class poor believe in) will end up in your bank account, ready to be moved offshore as soon as Big Brother turns his back. Information is your best ally, and you want the RIGHT information.

The mentality of fear is one that belongs to the underclasses, anyway. When you've got a yacht more than 60 feet long and a helicopter, do you really think some schmuck in a Corolla is going to be able to touch you? Not unless you get your town car snared in midtown traffic, and unless a big account is at stake, you shouldn't be there to begin with.

Do Your Research: You gotta help yourself first. You gotta understand certain things that poor people just don't seem to get, even after multiple applications of crippling poverty, minimal prospects, and curative destitution. Imagining that the cards are stacked against you is a fearful response not worthy of those worthy of riches. Seriously, if people just stopped being lazy and afraid, everyone could be wealthy. It's astoundingly simple and there are lots of books about it that were not written by snake-oil salesmen.

But, hey, you'll probably just sit there on the couch feeling sorry for yourself and imagining there's a certain way the world's run where decent living conditions are magically withheld from %80+ of all of humanity. Okay there, you red marxist fuck, why don't you go post on Tumblr about the %1 being a bunch of pathological parasites. See where that gets you, while the smart get going on a fantastic journey to wealth, power, and respect.

Squatters' Revolution

Well America is looking as dirty as the last 30 years predicted. Sometimes I get the sense that there are significant instabilities in North America in general, and that the oligarchy can no longer mask itself and therefore has adopted the obscurantist angle. "Obscurantist?" you ask, mouth agape stupidly. Yes, stupidy, obscurantist as in not revealing anything to anyone AKA dealing with the world sensibly - information-as-necessary style living. Which is a pretty great hypocrisy in a system where your bank is entitled to know your state of employment in addition to the wealth of other personal information they are entitled to. Yes the ability to go to your bank and cash a cheque and go home without them having explicit statements from you concerning your status is probably eroded.

Now it seems a small thing, and it is. Frankly I don't really care so much as I find it odd the bank cannot just simply assume a thing like that. So you know nothing about the people who ultimately shape your reality (unless you think actors, celebrities, and personalities do this) and the global reality, but you share your information on a 'no-need-to-know-basis' because the information of your life is so useless to anything but a marketer or criminal that it is a balm to your existential angst that at the very least you can have a cyber-billboard. This could be protested by refusing outright to identify yourself on the internet, boycotting Facebook, Google+, etc... but of course your networking opportunities would suddenly revert to mid-90's standards. In other words we could go back to making personal statements in person, but then we can't hope 1000 strangers will praise us. We could hope for maybe 10 intimates to admit our ideas have some merit.

Not that protest will mean anything since freedom is still exactly what it was at the dawn of humanity: a dream that can be indulged in only by the most powerful individuals or through the most powerful delusions. Freedom is a pretty goddamned stupid goal, yet it is a noble one Oh, but ironically the idea of freedom has generated the idea of slavery. Currently there is also a pervasive mode of thought which infers that freedom can be bought, assuming freedom is laziness, recreation, or inaction and time is the currency which buys it. Microfreedom does exist - yes in day to day experiences you have a sense that anything could be done; in the macro scale there is no significant freedom at all. You must acquire and spend wealth, dress well, pretend to be contented with the system, and enter automobile culture or else live as an abnormal, stunted, or subnormal individual.

Undercover Dross

If anyone can answer the following question for me, I'd be much obliged: Is Undercover Boss just a capitalist circlejerk? I am all for a cathartic show in this post-financial binge era, but those binging on dollars are still binging on dollars. But don't get me wrong. I'm not some sort of perverse thinker. I like the positivity of the show, and the genuine concern the boss shows for the workers he finds (picked out by the producers no doubt) while ignoring the larger issues. People who listen to their guts are born leaders, and all people are born from people who had to listen to their guts. It all makes perfect sense.

Last night's episode had a fat boss dealing with his skinny minions and getting out of breath while working the roomservice beat, the maintenance beat, and even (briefly) the sales beat. I'm getting out of breath just thinking about the goodwill he showed by giving one man five thousand dollars for a suit. I admit, I am not the sort to like largesse, but when largesse is dressed up as charity I lose my breath. A good suit can be bought for a thousand dollars or less, easily. The deals get better if you know a good tailor. Maybe, I don't know, and this is obviously a heretical thought, but the whole show could be replaced by one or two executives agreeing to forfeit raises and bonuses in order to raise the general level of pay.

The part that really gets me is how the minions meet the boss in his office, and he goes "Remember me?" all condescendingly, and tells them that he is really Robert Rupert Maximilian Guildenstern III. Then they're expected to cry, and the bosses have a habit of talking about their parents and crying. Oh everyone is sad about their parents, especially those of us who owe our parents much, but on television you should keep your composure, even if you're dealing with a woman (your employee) who got kicked out of her house as a pregnant teen and now works the graveyard shift at your motel. It's almost as if the tears of the minions are sustenance to both the impressionable audience and the boss.

I find it sickening. This is the sort of cloying 'populism' that is the new PR face of industrial callousness. CBS no doubt is paying out the 'prizes' the boss awards, and the boss learns a few lessons, and everyone is richer. Except for, you know, the rest of the employees who are still toiling as ever, and probably a little riled that they didn't get picked. Then again, what business do I have trying to equate reality with TV? Enjoy your cake, capitalists, and when you feed the scraps to the dogs and invite the cameras to educate the plebeians about your good heart and kind nature, feel good about that too. This is your time, revel in it and be glad...
